A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER, Bonny Astor:

I’m so glad you’re interested in hosting TEiP somewhere new :-)

These events are really rewarding to organise, and they create much-needed spaces for people to come together and think differently.

TEiP is the result of experience, enthusiasm, a bit of luck, and a lot of work.

The TEiP format and ethos draw on my years of experience as a group facilitator in a range of unlikely settings (e.g. Hearing Voices Peer Support Groups, Prison Philosophy Discussion Groups, Occupational Therapy Groups, etc.). These roots make TEiP tangibly different from other ‘Philosophy Meetups’, and I think they’re part of what makes it so appealing.

Since launching the pilot event in 2023, I’ve nurtured and grown the community in London, learning as I go and refining things along the way. I’ve written over 300 original thought experiments on over 120 themes, hosted over 150 events, and met over 8000 people.

TEiP London now sells out every event, often over a month in advance.

I’d love to share TEiP with more people, so I’ve set up a few ways of doing so.

BONNY’S REFLECTIONS ON CREATIVE COMMUNITY BUILDING

I’ve learned so much from creating and sustaining TEiP over the past 3 and a half years: from practical tips like venue choice, to more philosophical questions like “what is the value of talking to strangers?”. I’m sharing my learning on SUBSTACK.

  • This was a fantastic interactive event. The host created a warm atmosphere for attendees. The content was delivered exactly as promised —sparking debates and challenging the way we think about life and our own morals. Engaging in discussions with adults from diverse backgrounds allowed us to explore different perspectives while also enhancing our communication skills. I would definitely attend again!   • What could be better than an evening in a pub with a group of interesting diverse people, talking and debating thought provoking subjects. This made all the better as it is run by Bonny who is warm, open and friendly. The idea that we bypass small talk which can be boring, and get to have fun sharing our thoughts and ideas but also learning as you hear other's opinions. Quite frankly well done for starting something special...the huge number of attendees speaks volumes.

  • Thought Experiments in Pubs is one of my favourite groups. Bonny is a kind person who brings a lot of positive energy to all the events. She also has the strength of character to do the hard work of running a large group. Each event is well organised and there are also a number of well-run WhatsApp groups. All this means that lots of interesting people are attracted to the events. The conversations are deep, but not too earnest: the intention is to get something positive from the experience. The new, second, location is excellent as it is more central and quieter. Again Bonny has made the effort to find a sensible venue.
